This morning we walked down to the Capitol Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church. The church members were amazingly friendly and made us feel very welcome. It was Communion Sabbath, so we had the opportunity to wash each other's feet (which was pretty cool since we had just looked at the Last Supper for one of our worships). Unfortunately, we had to leave before the breaking of the bread, but we did get to enjoy fun singing and a a passionate sermon.
After church, we drove up to Gettysburg and did an audio tour of the battlefield. The photos below are from yesterday and today.

Today, my group went to homeless shelter for service. Unfortunately, they didn’t have us scheduled for today so we went back to the church. Ms. Chelsea came up with a plan to give sandwiches to the homeless and to “bond” with them. After we made lunch for others, and ourselves we walked around D.C trying to share with homeless people. At the end of the day we got C.S.M shirts and talked about our experience here in D.C. Mhina Today, my group (group 1) went to Charlie’s Place. Charlie’s Place is held at a church, and they serve daily breakfast. Almost everyday they have a set menu and they ask a different person to come, that most homeless people are not exactly accustomed to. Today it was a hairdresser and they did hair and hair cuts for free. After Charlie’s Place, we walked to Starbuck’s. Almost everyone got a frappuccino, which didn’t make any sense because it was freezing outside! Then we came back to the church and both groups took a streetcar to the Union Station/Mall. Group 1 `stayed at the station and group 2 went to the capitol building. The groups talked and sat with the less fortunate and we met some really cool people, while eating our provided lunches with them. When we left we had a day debrief and we looked at our first day predictions and checked if anything had changed. Then Mr. Fox bought everyone a CSM t-shirt. I’m sad that our service here is over, but I’m excited as to what is to come on our touring “week”. Udo Today my group (group 2) went to clean and change sheets at a hospital for sick people, but when we got there we weren’t on the list so instead we went to starbucks. After starbucks we came back to church we regrouped and went out to give lunches to homeless people, but we only found five. It was super cold and we walked to the capitol building. One guy, Carlos, was very religious and kind and so many people passed him and just nodded at him. It was sad. We all met up at union station and finished with a prayer walk where we made three stops and the last was at the church we are staying at. Later we went to dinner at thai food and we were laughing so much, it was so much fun. The drive back to church was awesome also because we were listening to random songs and singing along. This was a super fun week and im glad we got to serve people. Leah Today, my group (group 1) ate breakfast at 5:30a.m because we went to Charlie’s Place. At Charlie’s Place we helped serve food and talked to people who were at one point experiencing homelessness. After Charlie’s Place we walked to Starbucks and got frappuccino’s and mocha’s. After enjoying our drinks, we walked back to the car and headed back to the church where we stay Douglass Memorial United Methodist Church. When we got there, we saw group 2 and planned to pass out sandwiches to people who are experiencing homelessness around Union Station. One person I met who was experiencing homelessness was named Colleen. She was a very wise person but unfortunately had a mental illness. On the way back from Union Station, we had a prayer walk where we prayed for certain things in around the street. The last thing that we did for the day was eat Thai food for dinner. Everything was vegetarian so that was great for me. And the food was great! I'm lacking pictures from today, but I believe the other chaperones took more which I'll try to post tomorrow. Too... tired... must... go... to... bed...
Tamara Rushby: 3/22 Today as our fourth day of the Mission Trip, we woke up later for a change, ate breakfast, and got the opportunity to experience homelessness for ourselves. This morning, Group Two worked at Our Daily Bread serving food for people with and without homes and spending time connecting with them. It was really a really meaningful experience for me because of the connections and conversations I had with people and because of the beauty of the life testimony of the
I lost the blogs that students wrote yesterday, so the students graciously rewrote them. Here they are:
Well, we had four kids write blurbs about their experiences today, but those blurbs have mysteriously vanished. I'll try to get the students to rewrite their thoughts tomorrow, but until then a quick synopsis. Group Two woke up at 4:20 to go serve breakfast at Charlie's Place, while Group One had a slightly later morning serving breakfast at Our Daily Bread. In the afternoon, Group Two went to help at A Wider Circle furniture distribution organization while Group One delivered meals throughout the city. Group Two had a little extra time in our schedule, so we stopped by National Cathedral and ran around it in the freezing slush and later dropped by the historic home of Frederick Douglass. This evening, Tamara, Udo, and Isabella did a great job of leading out in a moving worship thought. You'd be proud of your kids! By the way, it snowed on us and is supposed to snow more tonight and tomorrow. If I could do do emojis, I'd insert a frozen face one...
This morning we went on a prayer tour of Washington, D.C. Our guides took us around to different neighborhoods and told us about different challenges that the city faces. Along the way, we saw an amazing view overlooking the city, the Capitol, and the White House. As we were stopped near the White House, we saw Marine One land.
We made it! The flight was smooth. It took forever to get the rental vans. The weather was warm today. The chaperones enjoyed taking in the difference in architecture and neighborhoods. We’re getting settled in to the church where we’re staying. And the kids are thriving without cell phones. They’ve enjoyed playing cards and Mafia and making a lot of noise. Even though it’s 7:30pm CA time, we’re trying to head to bed since we’ll be up nice and early in the morning. Tomorrow, we’ll spend the morning doing a prayer tour of D.C., and in the afternoon we’ll be splitting up with one group visiting elderly citizens who struggle with dementia.
