Today, my group went to homeless shelter for service. Unfortunately, they didn’t have us scheduled for today so we went back to the church. Ms. Chelsea came up with a plan to give sandwiches to the homeless and to “bond” with them. After we made lunch for others, and ourselves we walked around D.C trying to share with homeless people. At the end of the day we got C.S.M shirts and talked about our experience here in D.C.
Today, my group (group 1) went to Charlie’s Place. Charlie’s Place is held at a church, and they serve daily breakfast. Almost everyday they have a set menu and they ask a different person to come, that most homeless people are not exactly accustomed to. Today it was a hairdresser and they did hair and hair cuts for free. After Charlie’s Place, we walked to Starbuck’s. Almost everyone got a frappuccino, which didn’t make any sense because it was freezing outside! Then we came back to the church and both groups took a streetcar to the Union Station/Mall. Group 1 `stayed at the station and group 2 went to the capitol building. The groups talked and sat with the less fortunate and we met some really cool people, while eating our provided lunches with them. When we left we had a day debrief and we looked at our first day predictions and checked if anything had changed. Then Mr. Fox bought everyone a CSM t-shirt. I’m sad that our service here is over, but I’m excited as to what is to come on our touring “week”.
Today my group (group 2) went to clean and change sheets at a hospital for sick people, but when we got there we weren’t on the list so instead we went to starbucks. After starbucks we came back to church we regrouped and went out to give lunches to homeless people, but we only found five. It was super cold and we walked to the capitol building. One guy, Carlos, was very religious and kind and so many people passed him and just nodded at him. It was sad. We all met up at union station and finished with a prayer walk where we made three stops and the last was at the church we are staying at. Later we went to dinner at thai food and we were laughing so much, it was so much fun. The drive back to church was awesome also because we were listening to random songs and singing along. This was a super fun week and im glad we got to serve people.
Today, my group (group 1) ate breakfast at 5:30a.m because we went to Charlie’s Place. At Charlie’s Place we helped serve food and talked to people who were at one point experiencing homelessness. After Charlie’s Place we walked to Starbucks and got frappuccino’s and mocha’s. After enjoying our drinks, we walked back to the car and headed back to the church where we stay Douglass Memorial United Methodist Church. When we got there, we saw group 2 and planned to pass out sandwiches to people who are experiencing homelessness around Union Station. One person I met who was experiencing homelessness was named Colleen. She was a very wise person but unfortunately had a mental illness. On the way back from Union Station, we had a prayer walk where we prayed for certain things in around the street. The
last thing that we did for the day was eat Thai food for dinner. Everything was vegetarian so that was great for me. And the food was great!
