The goal of this class is to stimulate students to think more deeply about what they read, deducing the work's themes and establishing their own evidence-based perspectives on the ideas. Students will think about literature and life in a way they have not been able to before.

Lord of the Flies
A classic tale with rich, symbolic prose that examines the downfall of a group of boys stranded alone on an island. More than just a story, this book raises questions about the nature of man, the roots of conflict and suffering, government, freedom versus security, individual rights, and more. In reading this book, students will grasp the desperate plight of humanity and will consider solutions to this problem.

Quarter Two Extra Credit Opportunity
If you'd like the opportunity to earn extra credit for this class (or just to develop your understanding of the world and ability to think), you may read the book Night, written by Elie Wiesel, over Christmas break. The book can be bought on Amazon for $6.83. It can also be found in any bookstore or library, and I believe that I even have a copy in my bookshelf here at school.
Night is a memoir of Elie Wiesel's experience in concentration camps during the Holocaust. It captures the horror of the experience, and it is not a feel good book. As you read, look for connections between the ideas laid out in The Lord of the Flies and the darkness of what was happening in the world in the 1930's and 1940's. Also, be thinking about why people do what they do, and what we can do to fight against evil (or for good) in the world.
The amount of extra credit you receive will be based on the thought and understanding that you demonstrate to me. Reading the book and talking to me about it would receive points. Writing a book report of about three pages where you spend the first half of the paper summarizing the content and the second half responding to the content would receive more credit. Completing the journaling assignment below would receive the most credit.

The Hiding Place
An autobiography of a Christian woman in Holland who hid Jews during the Holocaust, resulting in her imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps and the deaths of her sister and father. This story brings to light the good news of the Gospel and provides the solution to humanity's problem presented in Lord of the Flies. The book raises excellent discussions, such as "How should a Christian act when evil is in power?"
